You should also visit the dentist regularly for dental exams and cleanings to ensure your smile is still healthy.
The initial development of gum disease is referred to as gingivitis and occurs when your gums are irritated by plaque buildup. You can recognize the symptoms of gingivitis if you notice any inflammation, redness, or swelling in your gums, as well as bleeding and a sore feeling. At this point, you may be able to reverse these conditions with proper dental care. Be sure to brush at least twice a day, thoroughly floss daily, and rinse your mouth with an antibacterial mouthwash. You can further protect your gums by eating foods that fight gum disease, such as kale, cheese, apples, yogurt, carrots, and spinach.
Untreated gum disease will progress to periodontitis, a more aggressive stage that results in gum recession, infected pockets around the teeth, and eventual tooth and bone loss.
